New Year's Resolutions in 2018
I love making lists, because I love checking things off of my lists and the feeling of accomplishment that comes with them. As we approach the start of another school year, there are school supply lists; calendar event lists; and things-to-do-before-summer-ends lists. It also has given me an opportunity to stop and reflect on my New Year's Resolution list, and see how I'm doing against some of my goals. Over the years, I've gotten better at both setting goals that are achievable, even if they're challenging, and in keeping up with meeting the goals over the course of the year.
To capture that feeling of satisfaction, I'm going to officially capture my progress against the 2018 list here.
To capture that feeling of satisfaction, I'm going to officially capture my progress against the 2018 list here.
- Speaking with Kindness - well, not really something to check off, but I'm at least still consciously aware that this is something I want to do better at.
- Complete two family vacation scrapbook albums - I finished our family Disney album on October 7th, as progress was neglected for several months as I enjoyed the Wisconsin summer. The second one was too much of a stretch, but I did get all of the pictures printed out from our Great Western Adventure Driving Vacation in 2014, so that will be a project to try and complete in 2019.
- Read ten classic books - I did it! Final list:
- A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
- The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
- Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
- A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway
- Black Boy by Richard Wright
- Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
- The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
- Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
- A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
- East of Eden by John Steinbeck

- Complete four endurance events - I ran the Illinois Marathon in May and had a great race, which was delightful given that my last several marathons have not been easy or even fun, in some cases. I also completed the Old Orchard Beach 70.3 in Maine on August 26th! The other two on my radar were the Door County Century Ride which I completed on September 9th, and my crazy plan to hike the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim on September 15-16th. Resolution accomplished!
- Go camping with Caroline - we managed this one in a totally new way when we went boat-in camping with her Girl Scout troop! It was quite an experience, and left us wanting to go again, just the two of us. We had a campground reservation for Labor Day weekend, but the weather didn't cooperate, so we bailed on the plan. We're keeping our eye on the second week of October to see if we can squeeze one weekend of camping in before the weather turns too cold for us.
